Abstract:Objective Our study aimed to evaluate the development of newborns delivered in Guangzhou according to the INTERGROWTH - 21st standard.Methods We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate development status of 32 316 singleton newborns delivered in the Third Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University from 2009 to 2015.Results The weight and length development status of 32 316 newborns were basically consistent with the INTERGROWTH-21st standard. The head circumference (HC) deviated from the INTERGROWTH-21st standard. There were 6 861 infants below the 10th percentile of HC, accounting for 21.2%. A total of 153 cases was identified as microcephaly, accounting for 0.5% of the newborns.Conclusion The proportion of newborns with small head or microcephaly in Guangzhou is higher than that of other populations. Our results indicate that we should re-evaluate the fetal head growth of this population to ensure proper pregnancy care and adequate fetal development.
