Abstract:Objective To investigate the potential effect of over-weight and obesity on semen quality mediated TNF-α and IL-6. Methods According to the body mass index values we divided 324 male cases into low-weight group, normal weight group, over-weight group and obese group. Then we determined the semen parameters, sperm morphology, sperm DNA integrity, spermatozoa acrosin activity, seminal plasma zinc, and serum TNF-α and IL-6 levels. Results Compared with normal weight group, the progressive motility in low-weight, over-weight and obese groups was significantly decreased. However, the abnormal head rate in obese group was significantly increased. The sperm spermatozoa acrosin activity and seminal plasma zinc concentration were found significantly decreased in obese group. The serum TNF-α and IL-6 levels were significantly increased in over-weight group and obese group. Both progressive motility and sperm concentration have a nonlinear association with the levels of serum TNF-α and IL-6. Conclusion The decrease in semen quality caused by over-weight and obesity may be mediated by serum TNF-α and IL-6 levels.
