Abstract:Objective To evaluate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A, C, and D in human epithelial ovarian cancer, and to examine their relationship with clinicopathologic features. Methods The immunohistochemical method was used to determine the expression of VEGF-A, C, and D in 53 human epithelial ovarian neoplasm, of whom 37 cases were malignant, 9 were borderline, and the other 7 were benign. These patients received operation in the our hospital from January 2003 to December 2008. Eight cases of normal ovarian tissues taken from patients with adenomyosis by panhystero-salpingo-oophorectomy were chosen as the control group. Results VEGF-A, VEGF-C, and VEGF-D expressed in cytoplasm or cytomembrane of malignant and borderline human epithelial ovarian cells, and in vascular endothelial and some inflammatory cells of stroma. But in benign and normal groups, they only expressed in vascular endothelial cells with a lesser extent. VEGF-A expression was stronger in poorly-moderately differentiated groups, and also stronger in stages Ⅲ and Ⅳ than in stages Ⅰ and Ⅱ. VEGF-C expression was stronger in poorly-moderately differentiated groups, stronger in stages Ⅲ and Ⅳ than stages Ⅰ and Ⅱ, and in lymph-node metastatic groups. VEGF-D expression was stronger in poorly-moderately differentiated groups, stronger in stages Ⅲ and Ⅳ than in stages Ⅰ and Ⅱ. Conclusion VEGF-A, C, and D proteins might play an important role in ovarian cancer development and in malignancy progression. They may be used as new target for therapy.
