Abstract

Objective To investigate the weight gain of pregnant women in the first trimester in Beijing. Methods A total of 1 712 pregnant women in the obstetric clinic of Haidian District Maternal and Child Health Hospital, Beijing were investigated by questionnaires from January 4, 2018 to May 31, 2018. Weight data pre-pregnancy and early pregnancy were obtained. According to the BMI group before pregnancy, the pregnant women were divided into underweight group, normal weight group, overweight or obesity group, and the weight gain of the whole study object and each group during pregnancy was analyzed according to the IOM (the Institute of Medicine) standard. Results A total of 1 370 pregnant women were included in the final data analysis. The average weight gain in the first trimester was estimated to be (1.0±3.5) kg. 909 women (66.4%) were lower than the IOM recommendation standard, 140 women (10.2%) met the IOM standard, and 321 women (23.4%) exceeded the IOM standard. According to pre-pregnancy BMI, there was a significant difference in weight gain among groups in the first trimester. The weight growth rate of underweight group was higher than that of normal BMI group, and the weight growth rate of overweight or obese group was lower than that of normal BMI group. Conclusion Compared with IOM standard, only 10.2% of the pregnant women met the recommended standard, which suggests that Beijing government should strengthen maternal weight management and the publicity of relevant knowledge.
