Objective To examine the associations between unintended pregnancy and maternal health-related behaviors (smoking, drinking alcohol, supplement of folic acid and supplement of multivitamin) in the first trimester.Methods Data from 7 976 participants in the first trimester enrolled in the Chinese Pregnant Women Cohort study (CPWCS) was analyzed. The descriptive statistics were calculated for the baseline characteristics including maternal age, ethnicity, household registration type, education, occupation, family annual income, and maternal health-related behaviors including smoking, drinking alcohol, supplement of folic acid and supplement of multivitamin respectively. Chi-square tests were performed to examine whether those characteristics were different between unintended pregnancy women and intended ones. Logistic regression was used to analyse the relationship between unintended pregnancy and maternal health-related behaviors in the first trimester.Results In CPWCS, 29.3% of the pregnancies were unplanned. Women with unintended pregnancy had higher odds of passive smoking, drinking, insufficient supplement of folic acid and insufficient supplement of multivitamin, compared to the women with intended pregnancy, (OR=1.33, 95%CI: 1.21~1.47; OR=1.97, 95%CI: 1.63-2.38; OR=2.31, 95%CI: 2.00-2.66; OR=1.20, 95%CI: 1.08-1.32, respectively).Conclusion Unintended pregnancy may be a risk factor for passive smoking, drinking alcohol, insufficient supplement of folic acid and insufficient supplement of multivitamins during the first trimester. Reducing the incidence of unintended pregnancy may promote healthy behaviors of mothers during their early pregnant stage..
