Abstract:Objective To study the association between the level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in maternal plasma and the risk of spontaneous preterm birth. Methods We conducted a case-control study by recruiting a total of 298 pregnant women, including 99 women with spontaneous preterm birth and 199 women with the full term delivery. Demographic characteristics of those women were collected from computer-based patient record system. Concentrations of 15 US Environmental Protection Agency priority-controlled PAHs in the plasma samples were measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. Results The median and interquartile range of ΣPAHs (the sum of 15 PAHs) was 1 508 (577-2 633) ng/g fat, while that of the case group was 1647 (578-2 951) ng/g fat and the control group was 1 502 (575-2 425) ng/g fat. Except for benzo(a)anthracene, no statistically significant differences between the two groups for the other 14 PAHs were observed between the case and control groups. Conclusion We didn't observe an association between the level of PAHs in plasma of pregnant women during the second and third trimester and during the third trimester with the risk of spontaneous preterm birth.
