Abstract:Objective To understand the prevalence of suspected language delay of left-behind children aged 0-3 in rural areas of China and its relationship with parent-child interaction. Methods A cross-sectional study and stratified paired cluster sampling were used to investigate 878 rural left-behind children aged 0-3 and their caregivers in Yudu County, Jiangxi Province, Tongjiang County, Sichuan Province, Lushi County, Henan Province, Sansui County, Guizhou Province and Pingshan County, Hebei Province from April 2018 to July 2018. Ages and Stages Questionnaires-Chinese, Third Edition (ASQ-3) were used to detect the suspected language delay. Taking the suspected language delay as the dependent variable, Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to calculate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of too little parent-child interaction after adjusting the confounding variables. Results The suspected language delay of left-behind children aged 0~3 was 11.9%. After controlling children's sex, month age, type of stay and the cultural level of caregivers, less parent-child interaction, caregiver depression and too long daily video time were risk factors for suspected language delay of left-behind children aged 0~3, and the corresponding odds ratios were 3.40(95%CI=1.94~5.98),2.00(95%CI=1.27~3.17)and 2.00 (95%CI=1.01~3.99)respectively. Conclusion The suspected language delay of left-behind children aged 0-3 in rural areas of China is unoptimistic, and less parent-child interaction is a risk factor.
