Abstract:Objective To exmine the effect of Shan’s massage therapy in combination with syndrome differentiation acupuncture point stimulation on meconium discharges in low birth weight premature infants. Methods Sixty cases of premature infant with low birth weight admitted to our hospital from April 2010 to December 2011 were selected and were randomly assigned to massage group or conventional therapy group, with 30 cases in each. Routine preterm neonate nursing was used in the two groups. Shan’s massage therapy combined with syndrome differentiation acupuncture point stimulation was used in the massage group on the basis of routine preterm neonate nursing. The first meconium time, daily cacation frequency, meconium turning yellow time, percutaneous jaundice index, phototherapy time, jaundice days, premature infant feeding intolerance, and hospital stay were recorded and compared between the two groups. Results The first meconium time and meconium turning yellow time in the massage group [(14.95±2.20) h and (51.63±6.12) h, respectively] were shorter than those in the conventional therapy group [(20.46±3.06) h and (59.37±8.66) h, respectively]. Jaundice days in the massage group and the conventional therapy group were (5.20±2.73) days and (9.06±4.55) days, respectively. Phototherapy time in the massage group and the conventional therapy group were (2.56±1.35) days and (3.84±2.29) days, respectively. The difference in percutaneous jaundice index between the two groups was not statistically significant. The incidence of feeding intolerance in the massage group (13.33 %) was lower than that in the conventional therapy group (36.67 %). The difference in hospital stay between the two groups was not statistically significant. Conclusion Early initiation of Shan’s massage therapy could promote meconium discharges to the low birth weight premature infant and reduce high bilirubinemia and feeding intolerance.
