Abstract:Objective To survey the work contents of and services provided by the midwives in different labor and delivery hospitals in Zhejiang Province. Methods Using stratified cluster sampling method, 61 labor and delivery hospitals were selected from four regions of Zhejiang Province, and a questionnaire survey on internationally recommended and non-recommended midwifery services was conducted. Results The number of operations that midwives can perform varied from 4 to 12. The internationally recommended midwifery services that implemented in most hospitals included:(1)early skin-to-skin contact between mother and infant (98.4%); (2)encourage and support breastfeeding initiation within first hour (98.4%); (3)and frequently assess passing of urine (98.4%). The internationally non-recommended midwifery services that implemented some hospitals included:(1)breath holding and exertion under the guidance of medical staff (65.6%); (2)continuous cardiotocography (60.7%); (3)and supine position during second-stage labor (52.5%). The best-implemented internationally-recommended pain relief service is to encourage women to adopt any upright position they find comfortable throughout labor (83.6%).Conclusion The work contents of and services provided by midwives are different across labor and delivery hospitals, suggesting a need to formulate standard midwifery services suitable for China's national conditions to further improve the quality of the services.
