Abstract:Objective To obtain the prevalence of anemia in infants and to identify risk factors in Zhongguancun community of Beijing. Methods We collected basic information and hemoglobin concentration of 937 infants when they were 8 months old and who were born from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2013 and lived in Zhongguancun community of Beijing. We used univariate and multivariate Logistic regression model to identify factors associated with anemia in infants. Results The total incidence of anemia in infants aged 8 months in the community was 28.8%. Among anemic infants, mild anemia accounted for 90.7%, and moderate 9.3%. No severe anemia infant was observed. In the univariate analysis, children’s registered residence place, mother’s education level, and feeding patterns before 6 months were associated with the risk of anemia. In the multivariate Logistic regression analysis, children’s residence place and feeding patterns remained significant. Children’s residence place outside of Beijing was a risk factor of anemia (OR: 1.483; 95%CI: 1.036-2.121), and artificial feeding (OR: 0.098; 95%CI: 0.045-0.215) and mixed feeding (OR: 0.507; 95%CI: 0.350-0.735) were protective factors. Conclusion The prevalence of anemia in infants aged 8 months in Zhongguancun community of Beijing remained high. Infants whose registered residence was non-Beijing and breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life were more likely to be anemic.
