Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship of visfatin levels in maternal serum, cord serum and placenta with fetal macrosomia. Methods 40 high birthweight infants (macrosomia group) and 40 normal birthweight infants (control group) were enrolled in this study. ELISA and immunohistochemistry were used to determine the levels of visfatin in maternal serum, cord serum, and placenta. The correlations of maternal serum visfatin with cord serum, birth weight, body mass index (BMI), and placenta weight were analyzed.Results Visfatin levels in maternal serum and in cord serum were both higher in the macrosomia group than in the control group (Ps<0.05). Visfatin levels in placenta were significantly higher in the macrosomia group than in the control group (P<0.05). Visfatin levels in cord blood showed a positive relationship with birthweight, newborn BMI, and placenta weight (r= 0.552, 0.493, and 0.501, respectively; Ps<0.05), but no relationship with visfatin levels in maternal serum was observed (r=0.330, P<0.05). In addition, visfatin levels in maternal serum were positively correlated with newborn birthweight and BMI (r=0.536 and 0.588, respectively; Ps<0.05).Conclusion A rise of visfatin levels in placenta may be related to the occurrence of fetal macrosomia. The change of visfatin in maternal serum could be used as a monitoring maker for clinical study.
