Abstract:Objective To explore the correlation between passive smoking and depressive emotion among pregnant women. Methods A total of 1 712 pregnant women were recruited from January 4, 2018 to May 31, 2018 from Haidian maternal and child health hospital, Beijing. Information on sociodemographic characteristics, disease, living habits and environmental exposure were collected through self-designed questionnaire, including age, occupation, current disease, medication using and adverse environmental exposure. 1 478 valid data were finally included. Based on the questionnaire information, non-smoker with a frequency of passive smoking no less than 1 time/week was classified as pregnant women in the passive smoking group. There were 102 pregnant women in the passive smoking group and 1 376 pregnant women in the non-passive smoking group. Binary Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between passive smoking and depressive emotion in early pregnancy. The pregnant women were further stratified by their husband′s smoking status, including 344 pregnant women were in the group of husband smoking and 1 121 pregnant women in the group of husband non-smoking group. A subgroup analysis was performed to explore the possible influence of husband smoking on the association between passive smoking and depressive emotion. Results The risk of depressive emotion among pregnant women with passive smoking was 1.85 times higher than that in non-passive smoking group (adjusted odds ratio, AOR:1.85, 95% CI:1.15-2.98). The AOR of passive smoking and depressive emotion in husband non-smoking group was 1.52 (95% CI:0.73-3.19), and it was 1.86 (95% CI:0.95-3.64) in husband smoking group. Conclusion Pregnant women with passive smoking during pregnancy have an increased risk of depressive emotion during their first trimester. Passive smoking caused by husband smoking may play a more important role in increasing risk of depressive emotion.
