Analysis of the Family Learning Supports and their Influencing Factors among 5128 Preschool Children in Tongzhou District, Beijing

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the current status of family learning support for preschool children in Tongzhou District, Beijing, and to understand the factors that affect the family learning support, for promoting the development of preschool children in Tongzhou District. Methods This study recruited the caregivers of children from the kindergartens in Tongzhou District, from December 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. We conducted a questionnaire survey on the demographic characteristics of the caregivers and their children, and on children's accessibility to seven activities of family learning support during three days preceding the survey. We used logistic regression to analyze the risk factors of family learning support. Results Among the caregivers of preschool children in Tongzhou District, Beijing, the proportion of them who provided family learning support, was 94.7%. Among caregiver fathers, the proportion was 52.2%; and among the mothers, it was 85.5%. In average, there were 6.3 (standard deviation [SD]=1.4) types of family learning support activities; among fathers, there were 3.6 types (SD=2.3); and among mothers, there were 5.5 types (SD=1.9). Compared to rural or suburban caregivers, the urban had a higher odds to provide family learning support (odds ratio [OR]=1.592, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.161-2.183); compared to caregivers from high-income family (50,000 yuan and above), those from low-income family (less than 50,000 yuan) had a lower odds to provide family learning support (OR=0.283, 95%CI:0.166-0.482); compared to caregivers of children aged 5 years and over, those of children aged 4 to 5 years had a higher odds to provide family learning support (OR=1.370, 95%CI:1.012-1.854).Conclusion In Tongzhou District, Beijing, for the preschool children, the overall proportion of family learning support is relatively high. Caregiver fathers provided less family learning support than the mothers did. In future works, it is necessary to increase strengthen health education for low-income or suburban/rural families, to promote the development of preschool children in Tongzhou District.
