Serum iron levels in preeclampsia in third trimester of pregnancy:A meta-analysis

Abstract:Objective To investigate the association between serum iron concentrations in the third trimester of pregnancy and the occurrence of preeclampsia (PE) by a Meta-analysis. Methods Databases including PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, WANFANG, and VIP were searched to identify case-control studies on iron levels in the third trimester of pregnancy and PE as of March 2014. Selected publications were included in the Meta-analysis. Results Twenty-one case-control studies were included. The results showed that serum iron level in preeclampsia was higher than that of control group, but without a difference being statistically significant [SMD=0.39,95% CI:-0.34-1.12, P=0.29]. Compared with control group, serum iron level in mild and severe PE were both higher, with both differences being significant [SMD=1.84, 95% CI:0.65-3.03, P<0.05; SMD=2.82, 95% CI:1.52-4.13, P<0.0001, respectively]. Conclusion Serum iron levels in the third trimester of pregnancy were associated with occurrence of PE.
