Abstract:Objective To describe the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of birth defects in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province between 2007 and 2015.Methods Data collected from the birth defects surveillance system in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture between 2007 and 2015 were used. The prevalence and trends of birth defects were analyzed.Results During the study period, 1322 cases of birth defects were identified among 110 635 births, with a prevalence of 11.95‰. The prevalence of birth defects showed an increased trend during the nine years. The top five birth defects were congenital heart defects, polydactyly, cleft lip and/or palate, neural tube defects, and ear malformation. The prevalence of congenital heart defects increased steadily and accounted for a major proportion of total birth defects.Conclusion The prevalence of birth defects increased from 2007 to 2015. Improvement in diagnosis may in part contribute to the increase in congenital heart defects.
