Abstract:Objective To investigate the associations between rare earth elements (REEs) in serum among pregnant women and small for gestational age birth (SGA).Methods The subjects were from the pregnancy cohort established in Shouyang County and Pingding County of Shanxi Province from 2009 to 2013. A nested case-control study design was used, a total of 126 SGA infants and 381 control subjects were included. The content of rare earth elements in serum was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).Results There was no significant correlation between serum light REEs and the risk of SGA. When stratified by sampling time, the crude odds ratio between neodymium and SGA was 1.85 (95%CI:1.06-3.25), and the crude odds ratio between all light REEs and SGA was 2.19 (95%CI:1.24-3.88) in the first trimester. After adjusting for other confounders, there were no significant associations between light REEs and SGA. No significant associations were observed between lights REEs in the second trimester and SGA.Conclusion No significant association was found between light REEs in mother′s serum and risk of SGA.
