Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of the integrated interventions on caregivers' feeding practices on the undernutrition status of left-behind children (LBC) aged 6-35months.Methods A quasi-experimental design was applied in our study. Baseline and follow-up surveys of the Integrated Early Childhood Development (IECD) project were used for this study. The IECD project was implemented in 80 villages within four counties in provinces of Shanxi and Guizhou, from 2014 to 2016. The project provided integrated nutritional supplement (also known as Ying Yang Bao [YYB]), feeding consults and responsive healthcare for children aged 6-35 months old. In this study, in each province, the two counties were similar in economic statuses; one was selected as the control group and the other was the intervention group. Standard healthcare was provided for all participants. The intervention group also received the project interventions, additionally. Finally, the intervention group included 40 villages and the control included 43 villages. All children aged of 6-35 months and their caregivers in the selected villages were investigated twice during Jul.-Sep. in 2013 and 2016. Difference-in-difference (DID) model was employed to adjust the baseline difference, time trend and other potential confounding factors between the intervention group and the control group to estimate the effects. Results LBC aged 6-35 months and their caregivers were selected. At the baseline visit, there were 695 parent-child dyads in intervention group, and 478 dyads in control group at baseline. At the follow-up visit, there were 740 dyads in intervention, and 514 dyads in control. According to the DID model, the IECD intervention reduced the risk of undernutrition among the LBC aged 23-29 months (aOR:0.30; 95%CI:0.10, 0.91). However, the effect was not statistically significant among the LBC aged 6-35 months (P>0.05).Conclusion The integrated interventions effectively reduced the undernutrition prevalence for LBC aged 23-29 months old. The current YYB supplement could be used as a platform to improve the interventions for the optimal nutrition of LBC.
